| The
Westfield Sharks Sheffield have formally announced the departure
of BBL Coach of the Year and Head Coach of the club Chris Finch. Following
a playing and coaching career spanning ten years with the BBL
champions, the much sought-after Sharks' favourite has finally
been lured to the main European stage by a German Bundesliga club. Despite
receiving several offers from European leagues over the years,
Coach Finch continued to build his career and helped develop the
Sharks into one of the most successful clubs in the BBL. Finch
started his career with the Sharks as one of two American players
under Coach Jim Brandon, before retiring to take on the role as
Head Coach at the early age of just 27. As
one of the most successful coaches in the BBL's recent history,
Finch's phenomenal record boasts no less than three Championship
titles, three National Cup titles, the Northern Conference title
and he opened his first season as a coach with the Trophy title.
In honour of his achievements he has been awarded the Coach of
the Year accolade in two of his six seasons at the helm. Having
offered Coach Finch a new contract, his decision not to return
was met with great sadness by the Sharks' board. However, all
concerned with the club are encouraged by the certain knowledge
that Finch is moving into a higher basketball arena where they
are confident he will have continued success. "We
are delighted for Chris, who has had to make a very difficult
decision to leave his home of ten years, but we feel this is an
excellent choice for the progress of his career," said General
Manager Sarah Backovic. "We will be sorry not to have him
around, but the foundations we have built over the years are strong
and we will continue to aim for the highest success." "I
cannot thank the club, the sponsors and the fans enough for all
they have done for me during my time in Sheffield," added
Finch. "Deciding to leave for new challenges abroad has been
one of the toughest decisions I have faced, but I feel confident
in my choice. I wish the club every success moving forward and
leave with Sheffield forever in my heart as a great club and a
wonderful place to live and work." Backovic
continued, "Whoever takes on this role has a tough act to
follow, however we are confident that whomever that may be will
receive the same support bestowed upon Chris from the organisation,
                sponsors and fans."Source:
