Disability Sport England is proud to have NBA star John Amaechi
open the British Open Athletics Championships, supported by Leisure
Connection Ltd, in Birmingham. It is great to have a man who has
achieved his dream, and is still ensuring that others achieve
theirs.
The
300 athletes competing at the event have their sights set on the
Paralympics in September 2004. This event is IPC sanctioned which
means the times can be used as qualifiers for such big events.
John will be present to spur the athletes on as well as officially
open the event at midday on Saturday 16th.
Talking
about the role, John said: "It's an absolute honour to be
in the company of so many amazingly talented and inspiring athletes
from all around the world. They are a testimony to the power of
self-belief and the opportunities that sport provides for building
confidence and breaking through prejudice."
Our
athletics programme focuses on skills and talent development as
well as building confidence through the medium of sport. We appreciate
the continued support from all sponsors, without whose assistance,
we would not be able to provide top sporting opportunities for
disabled sports people.
