The
seventh Pro-Am Summer League got underway Wednesday 25th June
and featured two intriguing match-ups. Last year’s semi-finalist
Hackney took on local rivals London United. However, many eyes
were on Pool A, where the colourful Streetball.co.uk team went
up against Summer League debutants, the English Students, who
introduced numerous new names and faces to regular followers of
the summer game.
Streetballer
Santa Ataha’s quickness caused problems for the opposition
throughout the game. He split the seams of the English defense
time after time, putting many of the university representatives
in foul trouble. Having established their biggest lead of the
game, Streetball lead 81-73 with just over 2 minutes remaining.
Coach Andre Alleyne’s men tried to make a last minute push
to snatch victory, but the Streetball.co.uk stood firm winning
87-84. Dean Williams and Tayo Adulaja led their respective teams
with 20 points apiece, while 4 players also Streetball recorded
an 87 – 84 victory.
Hackney
were convincing winners in the Pool B game by 84-72 against their
West London rivals. Laurent Irish was outstanding, with Rodney
Alexander as solid as ever. They combined for over 30 points.
London United, missing the inspiration of Steve Vear, looked intimidated
on offence against the immense 7’ 3” presence of Liam
Hughes. Walid Mumumi was impressive, but lacked support. He was
the leading scorer in the game with 28 points.
The
action continues on Wednesday 9th July with the second round of
league games. In Pool A, The English Students must defeat Sutton
if they are to have any chance of progressing to the play-off
stage. Sutton feature a core of players from their NBL Conference
squad, but will be bolstered by the guest appearance of two Americans,
including Duquesne graduate Aaron Lovelace.
In
the other game, the South Coast team will look to seize the initiative
from table topping Hackney. They will be coached by the Brighton
Bears staff and will feature a number of players from the team
that will represent England in European competition next season.
