The
Under 16 women’s team competing at the European Championships
in Croatia have fallen from third to fifth place in Group A after
a loss to the Slovak Republic. Although the teams have equal records
for the tournament (1 win, 2 losses), Slovakia holds on to 4th
place as a result of total points scored. Croatia remains undefeated
and atop the table after pummelling Macedonia 108-30 on Thursday
evening in front of 500 home fans.
England’s game on Thursday was a hard-fought affair throughout
as the first half ended with Slovakia leading 35-30. The third
quarter remained tight, although low scoring, with England losing
the period 9-10. The Slovak club widened the margin in the final
quarter and defeated England 70-55. Again, there was a good point
spread for England as four players scored in double digits including
a 12-point, 14-rebound performance by Angelina Browne. Helen Naylor
led the team with 16 points while Ellesmere Port Panthers, Lauren
Thomas-Johnson and Jo Leedham, scored 11 and 10 respectively.
Slovak Republic 70 (20, 15, 10, 25)
England 55 (19, 11, 9, 16)
England play the Ukraine this afternoon in what will likely be
a last-ditch effort to secure a berth in the top three of Group
A.
