Cadettes travel to Croatia for Euro Champs

22 April 2003
Pozega, Croatia

15th European Championship for Cadettes 2003,
Group A - Pozega, Croatia

On the morning of Easter Sunday, the young women from England’s National Cadettes team flew to Croatia to participate in the Challenge Round of the 15th European Basketball Championship. England’s “Group A” is the last of three groups to compete in this spring’s Challenge Round determining who will advance to the Final. Their path is not an easy one as they face the home country, Croatia, this evening for the first match.

“Group A” consists of England, Croatia, Ukraine, the Slovak Republic, Germany and Macedonia. Teams advance to the Final Round by finishing in the top three of their particular group. “Group C” finished their Challenge Round on April 20th with the top three spots going to Belarus, Spain, and the Czech Republic, respectively. “Group B” is finishing their Challenge Round today as Yugoslavia, Greece, and Italy are currently holding onto a finalist position.

The teams have a very tough ‘five games in five days’ schedule, as the tournament will end on Saturday, April 26th. Ian Day will be back as head coach of England after missing the Tournament of Cognac in France during late February through to early March due to work commitments. Here, assistant coach Nick Ibberson took over for Mr. Day and led the Cadettes to some impressive games including a win against Turkey. Star guards, Lauren Thomas-Johnson and Johannah Leedham who missed the French tournament, will be in the roster for this all-important week.
