Nick Nurse, Brighton Bears’ Cup winning Head Coach, has added the BBL Coach of the Month award for January to his ever-growing accumulation of prizes.
In all competitions the Bears had a commendable record of 6-1 but it’s a couple of memorable occasions that stand out early in 2005. Firstly on January 16th the Bears won the first piece of silverware of the season, their third in three years, by defeating Scottish Phoenix Honda Record Rocks 90-74 in the BBL Cup Final at the NIA.
Brighton also enjoyed fantastic success in another of the peripheral competitions as they qualified for their second BBL Trophy Final in two years. They overcame London Towers and Nurse had to use all his know-how from the sidelines as the game got hot down the stretch, eventually prevailing 87-84 winners.
Last season’s League winners also sit third in the BBL Championship table. They are six-points behind pace-setters Chester but hold a couple of games in hand.
Nurse has now been in the British game for around a decade, enjoying great success. He’s won the Championship twice, the Cup twice, the BBL Trophy and Coach of the Year twice. Then consider that there is still the possibility of a ‘clean-sweep’ of all four trophies this season.
The glory of the Cup win obviously struck a note with the fans as Nurse, who achieved 44% of the vote, fought off the competition of league leader’s TCS Chester Jets’ Paul Smith and December’s winner Fab Flournoy.
