This was the game GBR wanted to win; preparation had gone well and the
players were ready to play.
Neil Fingleton dominated the early offensive play and GBR led 18-14 after the
first quarter. Captain Junior Williams had done a great job on defending Russia's
outstanding Chouchakov and helping GBR to a 32-24 second quarter lead.
GBR were playing extremely well until four minutes to go in the period, but Russia
rallied to close to within 2 points at 36-34 (to GB) at half time.
The question was "could GBR sustain this intensity in the second half?".
Fouls to key players on both sides might be the key.
The answers to
these questions came soon. GBR continued to be terrific in defense and led 56-40
after the third quarter. Could they maintain this into the fourth? Was a 16 point
lead sufficient?
The answer was a resounding "YES". Coaches Nemeth and Garbelotto should
be congratulated.
Lethunya and Joseph
18 points, Baah 10 points, Bernard 10 points
A great victory
and high spirits for the final 16 - heads will turn at this result.
